I’m a husband, dad, lawyer, and civic leader, and am honored to be running for the Florida House of Representatives, District 85.
My wife Anne and I were married 28 years ago in Minnesota. We moved here two years later to raise a family in tropical paradise. We now have two wonderful kids, daughter Jackie who graduated in 2019 from Florida State University with a degree in piano performance and now is in graduate school, and son Alex who’s studying business at the University of Florida.
As a family, we’ve taken many memorable trips, including to National Parks and the Florida Keys, seeing everything from sharks to grizzly bears. At home we love to hike and bike in North County’s great parks and natural areas, and regularly visit MacArthur Beach State Park. Nothing beats spending time with the family outdoors.
I grew up in Winona, Minnesota, a small town on the Mississippi River, with six brothers and sisters. Played team sports, waterskied up and down the river in the summer, tobogganed in the winter. I’ve had jobs since I was 11, starting with a paper route. Worked in a factory making tire chains during summers in college, taught English after graduating, and after law school practiced law in Minneapolis, then South Florida.
I earned a B.A. with Honors from the University of Wisconsin, majoring in English, and a J.D. from Catholic University School of Law in Washington, DC, where I was an editor of the Law Review.
I’ve practiced law in Palm Beach and Broward Counties since moving here in 1993, counseling individuals and businesses and representing them in litigation. Among other things in my career, I’ve had the chance to save local jobs, preserve public beach access, save an innovative local company from shut-down by a hostile foreign corporation, and help people and businesses victimized by financial wrongdoing recover millions of dollars.
For the last two-and-a-half years I’ve been involved full-time in community service and related activities, including:
- Palm Beach County Transportation Planning Agency Citizens Advisory Committee
- Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners Citizens Committee on Airport Noise
- Waterfront Advisory Group
- Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County (providing free legal representation to the poor and disadvantaged)
- Leadership Palm Beach County
- Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce
- Palm Beach County Bar Association
- North County Section of the Palm Beach County Bar
In my career, I’ve gotten things done. I’m going to the Florida House to do the same.
I’m running for the Florida House to secure a prosperous future for families in the District and Palm Beach County. I’ll work hard to ensure a thriving economy with good-paying jobs, low taxes, and outstanding quality of life, including:
- Quality affordable health care.
- Clean water.
- Common-sense solutions to gun violence.
- Fully funded public schools.
- Increased affordable housing.
- A great life for our seniors.
- Increased use of renewable energy.
- Solutions to deal with sea-level rise and climate change.
I’m enjoying immensely the chance to meet District voters, and listen to their specific thoughts and concerns, so that I can give them voice in the Florida House.
In addition to working on the priorities of District residents, I’ll work to transform the political atmosphere in Tallahassee, where now there’s too much partisanship and not enough working together to seek common ground on the key issues that will determine our future. We need to work together if we want to improve our quality of life in Palm Beach County and keep it a viable place to call home.
I want our District to be a great place for us to live, work, and play. I’ll work hard to address the serious challenges we face in trying to meet that goal, through appropriate legislation. I’ve worked with legislation for 26 years as a lawyer; that’s the job after all – legislation.
